“Instagram is Life Porn”

I think we are all becoming more aware about the ways in which social media can be used for good, or for evil.

This article discusses just that.

Although I don’t agree 100% with this article, I think it definitely highlights some of the ways that Instagram can affect us negatively.

If you know me, you know I am a huge fan of Instagram! But I agree with the author that we need to structure our use of it in such a way that it won’t be harmful to us mentally or emotionally.

It always helps to keep in mind that Instagram is everyone’s highlight reel – not their real lives! Never try to live up to the standards of someone’s social media profile. Even the people who seem to have the most perfect and exciting lives have problems and struggles.

It’s all about perspective, and maintaining perspective is very important when using social media.

Is this something any of you struggle with? How do you guys protect yourselves when using social media (if at all)?

Personally with the exception of wordpress I try not to spend much time on social media, as like you say it can be very negative. Seeing snapshots of peoples lives and comparing yourself to them. It’s not healthy and perhaps people need to take a step back from social media

I always try to keep this in mind when curating my own Instagram feed. having a couple thousand followers, I realize that the things I d and say have further reaching impacts than I can possibly know, and I I try to be honest, and real. Yes, I post my delicious dinners, but they are MY delicious dinners- and I include the recipe! Yes, I post my flexed biceps, but the very next post will relate how I’m struggling with contest prep. A balance, I think, is important- I think that as consumers of social media, we need to be aware that if everything appears sunshine and roses, that’s likely not the whole story, and as producers of social media content, we should be aware that the human element, the downsides and struggles of life, do not make us appear weak, but more relatable, and we need to tap into that for the good of ourselves and our followers.

I couldn’t agree more – it is not only on us to acknowledge that not all the content out there is 100% real – but also important for US to set an example of being genuine and real on social media!! And yes that is the secret – it does make us more relatable! As you always are 🙂 thanks for sharing!!
